Colorado's Staircase to the Sky

The Manitou Incline, affectionately known as ‘the Incline’ by locals, presents a formidable challenge situated on the side of Pikes Peak. This hike is not just physically demanding but also an extreme test of willpower, attracting approximately 250,000 hikers annually, ranging from ages 7 to 70. With 2,744 steps and over 2,000 vertical feet to conquer in about a mile, the Incline offers breathtaking views and a sense of achievement for those who reach the summit.

The Manitou Incline Experience

Originally built as a cable car track for constructing pipelines on Pikes Peak, the Manitou Incline has been converted into a formidable hiking trail. With an average grade of 45% and sections peaking at 68%, it tests even the most seasoned hikers.

The Ascent Breakdown

Often likened to an outdoor StairMaster, the Incline’s path is strenuous and rewarding. A bailout point two-thirds of the way up offers a reprieve for those who need it, connecting with Barr Trail, which provides a scenic yet steep 3-mile path back down to the base. Reaching the summit not only offers stunning views but also a profound sense of accomplishment.

  • Lower Section: The initial segment is challenging yet doable, with railroad ties spaced to help establish a steady pace.
  • Middle Section: Here, the incline becomes steeper, significantly testing your endurance and strength.
  • Upper Section: The toughest part of the ascent, featuring irregular steps and thinner air, culminating in a rewarding summit experience.

Key Points to Remember

  • No pets allowed: The trail is too challenging and dangerous for pets.
  • Parking: While parking at the base is fee-based, a free shuttle runs every 20 minutes from downtown Manitou Springs.
  • Downhill use discouraged: Please descend using Barr Trail to ensure safety and respect for other hikers.

Planning Your Visit

All hikers must make a free online reservation before attempting the Incline. Reservations help manage the trail’s capacity and ensure a quality experience. You can book more than one slot at a time, but please reserve only the days and times you intend to use. Each reservation is for a specific half-hour check-in window to start your climb, not the completion time, which varies by individual.

Operating Hours:

  • Regular Hours (May 1 – Oct 31): 6:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Winter Hours (Nov 1 – April 30): 6:00 am to 3:00 pm
